Mastering Life’s Path: Discovering Calling & Embracing Choice

Date: January 1, 2024

Welcome to the first entry of our CEO Diary for 2024, where we explore pivotal concepts that shape our journey in both personal and professional realms. Today, we delve into two profound themes: discovering our life’s calling and understanding the dynamics of control and choice. These insights are not just theories; they are practical guides to living a life of purpose and mastering the art of focusing on what truly matters.

Discover Your Calling – The Life’s Task

“Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it’s the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: We are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Every individual embarks on a journey in life, seeking to carve out their destiny much like a sculptor shapes their creation. This process, though innate, requires cultivation and understanding. As children, our inclinations guide us effortlessly towards activities that spark our interest and curiosity. Yet, as we grow older, external influences and inner anxieties often obscure this path, leading us away from our true nature and potential.

The essence of rediscovering joy and fulfillment in life lies in reconnecting with this inner force. This inward journey, a quest for self-discovery, is the starting point on the path to mastery. It involves peeling back the layers of external expectations and societal norms to reveal our true selves. When we align our professional endeavors with our natural inclinations, not only do we excel in our careers, but we also find a deeper sense of satisfaction and purpose.

It is imperative to understand that this journey towards self-mastery and discovering our calling is an ongoing process. It is never too late to start, and each step taken is a step towards aligning with our Life’s Task.

Control and Choice

“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control.” – Epictetus, Discourses

The philosophy of Stoicism offers a powerful tool for modern living: the differentiation between what we can change and what we cannot. This understanding is essential in navigating the complexities of life and business. We often encounter situations that are beyond our control – like the unpredictability of weather or the perceptions of others. Investing our energy in trying to change these uncontrollable aspects is not only futile but also detracts from focusing on areas where we can make a real impact.

The Serenity Prayer, often cited in the recovery community, encapsulates this wisdom beautifully: accepting the immovable, having the courage to change what we can, and possessing the wisdom to distinguish between the two. This philosophy is not just for those in recovery; it is a universal principle that can guide us all. Whether it’s past traumas, other people’s actions, or any external circumstance, recognizing what lies within our power to change is crucial.

Today, let’s focus on identifying the aspects of our lives and work that we can influence. By directing our efforts towards these areas, not only do we become more effective and content, but we also gain a distinct advantage over those who continue to struggle against the unchangeable.

As we embark on this new year, let’s embrace the journey of discovering our calling and understanding the power of control and choice. These principles are not just pathways to personal and professional growth but also foundations for a life lived with purpose and clarity.
